What Does AI Say About Your Business? A Simple Visibility Check |
Check business facts, inspect cited sources, and improve the information you control |
A prospective customer asks an AI search tool about your business. The answer sounds confident. It also lists services you no longer provide and hours you changed months ago. That is a useful scenario to test before a customer encounters it. An AI business visibility audit is a structured way to examine how a search-enabled tool describes your company and whether the underlying information holds up. Treat the exercise as a spot check of public business information accuracy. One answer cannot establish your overall visibility, and appearing in an answer does not guarantee an inquiry or a sale.
Start with a record of the facts
Write down your current business name, website, contact details, location or service area, opening hours, and main services. Include important limitations, such as appointment requirements or services available only at certain locations. Use records you control to establish this baseline. If your own website and business listings disagree, resolve those differences before judging an AI answer against them.
Then choose a tool that can search the current web, and note whether search is actually enabled. An answer produced without live retrieval is a different kind of result from one that cites recently accessed pages. Do not enter customer records, private business information, or confidential project details. Public questions and public facts are sufficient for this exercise.
Ask questions a customer might actually ask
Begin with your business name and location. Ask what services you provide, how someone can contact you, and whether you serve a particular nearby area. Next, try a few discovery questions without naming the company, such as which local providers offer a service you genuinely provide. Keep the wording neutral. Asking a tool to explain why your company is the best will not produce a useful visibility test.
Record the exact prompt, tool, date, search setting, business mentions, factual errors, and cited pages. Repeat the same small set periodically so you have something comparable. Results can vary with wording, location, session context, and the system being used. A missing mention in one response is an observation, not proof that the business is invisible.
Open the sources behind the answer
Follow the citations. Check whether each page actually supports the statement attached to it and whether it refers to your business rather than a similarly named company. Classify problems by their likely origin. Your website may contain an old service page. A directory may list an outdated telephone number. Alternatively, the cited material may be correct while the answer misrepresents it.
Correct information you control first. For third-party errors, use the publisher's available correction or listing-update process. Where the tool provides a feedback option, report a mistaken answer with a clear explanation. Keep a dated record of corrections. Updating a source does not mean every search system will immediately retrieve or reflect the change.
Improve useful information rather than chasing tricks
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, official guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant, with no special additional optimization required. Eligible supporting pages must be indexed and able to appear in Search with a snippet; inclusion is not guaranteed. The same guidance recommends accessible text, useful internal links, accurate structured data where used, and current Business Profile information. Those statements concern Google's features and should not be treated as promises about every AI platform.
For your business, a sensible next step is to make service pages clear and specific. Answer the questions customers actually ask, explain your service area, and remove conflicting claims. Useful evidence of real experience is more valuable to readers than repeated declarations of being the best.
Repeat the check and connect it to business results
Run the same small audit monthly or after a major business change. Track corrected facts, relevant mentions, and cited pages, alongside inquiries and website activity where those sources are identifiable. Avoid turning a few prompts into a universal AI ranking score. The practical goal is to make accurate information easier to find and to reduce confusion when someone investigates your business.
